An Autism Diary

A day in the life of David Hartley

It’s Our Anniversary! :)

celebrate

That’s right!  DogForDavid.com is officially celebrating our anniversary today and we are inviting all of you to help us celebrate! 🙂   One year ago, on May 8th 2012, www.DogForDavid.com was officially registered and went on-line.  Since that day we have launched an official awareness video, started this blog, created a facebook fan page, held many fundraisers, and have shared countless stories and met a wonderful group of readers and followers from all over the world.  DogForDavid started out small with hopes of reaching more family and friends with a possible stranger here and there and has turned into something bigger and better than I could have ever first imagined.

As a lot of you know, we here at DogForDavid have a dual mission.  1) To raise the needed funds to help David, my son, get his service dog and 2) to raise better awareness and more compassion for those living on the Autism spectrum and for the family and friends who love and support them.

ThanksThanks to all of you, my readers and fans, the second mission has taken off in beautiful ways and has spread across this nation and even spilled over into others.  I have had the privilege to talk to, meet, and represent many different families and even to offer a platform with which to give a place to share their voice and the voice of others with Autism or in the Autism community.  I can’t thank-you enough for that as I count it not only as a privilege, but also as a deep and respected honor.

Now it is time though to go back to our 1st goal and get David the service dog he so desperately needs.  Perfect Fit Canines has found what could be a beautiful match for David in a young lab named Dallas, but we can’t make that match official unless we raise the needed funds to pay for his training and placement! We have $11,000 more to go before that becomes a reality. I will never stop fighting for awareness and compassion and I will never stop doing what I can to help educate and advocate, but I believe this can all be done while also helping a young boy on the severe end of the spectrum get the help he needs to have the freedom to just be a kid and enjoy all life has to offer him.  I can’t do this alone though which is where our anniversary celebration comes into play.

To celebrate our first year here at DogForDavid.com I am launching a contest for all who are interested, no matter what state or country you live in, to help us bring David’s dog home.  You can create your own teams or decide to go solo and you are free to choose the way you wish to fundraise.  The options are truly limitless and can include things like penny drives, bake sales, craft fairs, car wash, dinners, carnivals, game nights, or anything else you can imagine up. 🙂  You can even simply go to your family and friends and ask for each to chip in a dollar.  Every thing helps and there is no amount too big or too small.  The contest will last from now until the end of August to allow everyone plenty of time to get their fundraisers going and to collect as much as possible.  There will be three categories where winners will be chosen from:

1) Kids (up to age 18)

2) Adults

3) Out of country (to accommodate the difference in currency values)

255601_10151517148623366_1191412153_nPrizes for the top fundraisers or fundraising teams will be provided out of our prize stash with things that have been donated to DogForDavid from various local businesses and individuals.  Items include things like gift cards, clothing, craft kits, popular kids’ toys, movies, etc.  I will also be continuously adding to the stash over the summer as more tangible donations come in from our own fundraising efforts.  The top winners from each category will be allowed to choose their favorite prize from the stash upon notice of winning the fundraising contest.  We will also have certificates available to recognize and thank ALL  entrants which will be signed by me and will feature something from David (depending on his cooperation level at the moment, this could be anywhere from his signature to a small drawing or possibly even a few scribbles lol).

Important notice:  If the total amount being raised by the various teams and individuals goes over $2,000 a cash prize of $100 will be added to the prize lot for the top over all fundraiser!  That’s right!  The more raised, the better the prize potential is. 🙂  Only the top team/individual can win this prize though as we can’t afford to give out more than one cash prize.

We can be reached through comments on this blog, on our facebook page, or through our e-mail address (DogForDavid@rocketmail.com).  All those wishing to enter the contest are asked to “register” themselves by sending in a photograph and small note with their first name (for individuals) or name of team (if more than one) and where they are from (can be generalized down to state for those living in the United States or  name of country for those living in other countries).  If you wish to do so, you can also include a statement about why you decided to join the DogForDavid fundraising efforts.  Photos can be of you and/or your team or of something that can represent you.  All photos will be added to our teams album on the DogForDavid facebook page.  When your money is raised, send pictures or videos to our e-mail (DogForDavid@rocketmail.com) to show what was raised in order to officially enter the contest for the prizes.  These will in turn be shared with our readers and fans with the winners being featured in a special post on this blog. 🙂  All final donations can be officially sent in via Paypal or by mailing to:

  1. Congratulations! Also is the art show running next year? I thought I would wait until the last one was over until I asked. 🙂

    • Thanks 🙂 And definitely so 🙂 You were the first but definitely not the only one to request it so it has officially been made an annual event. 🙂 I even already talked to the current host, the Wire House Gallery, and they agreed to welcome us back same time next year. They love the show. 🙂 It’s May instead of April, but that’s ok because Autism awareness never needed to be confined to just one month anyway. 😉 🙂

    • Also, have you considered joining this event? (the anniversary fundraising contest?) It’s open to everyone. 🙂

  2. I will email you privately to discuss the “finer points” over the next few days 🙂

  3. Hello! I’ve been following your weblog for a long time now and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from Porter Texas! Just wanted to tell you keep up the good job!
