An Autism Diary

A day in the life of David Hartley

Alphabet Time :)

Been tired a lot lately, but I am slowly catching up. lol  In the mean time, here is a video I was able to capture of the boys on the 4th.  Hope you all enjoy it. : )  And yes, that’s the alphabet they are both singing. ^_^  So proud of them both. 🙂  Especially David though as he has worked so hard with me to recover from his last regression and he has made leaps and bounds this time. 😀 : )

David and Joshua both could actually recognize their letters individually before they could sing the alphabet.  With David, it was mainly because we were constantly (by his direction and lead) identifying the letters he saw in every day life.  For a couple of years it felt like he was on broken record always asking me what this one was and that one. lol  But it paid off in the end. : )

With the song itself, I can’t tell yet if he truly understands what he’s singing or if it’s simply more of his echolalia showing up again.  Either way though it’s progress and I’ll take it. : )  He knew the song before and it was clear he truly knew what he was singing too, but that was before his preschool years and the damage those regressions had on his over all development.

The song you here in the video is a bit different too from what most of us are most likely used to as well.  It came from a new show the boys found on Netflix while we were staying at Grandma’s house called Super Why.  They sang this song every show and because the boys liked the show so much, they watched it repeatedly every day.  That’s how they learned the song. 🙂

David is still a long way off from being able to read again and from being able to understand how to construct words out of his letters, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. 🙂
