An Autism Diary

A day in the life of David Hartley

Small Trip, Big Smiles

Thomas and boys_blog readyThanks to a family member’s generosity, the boys and I had a chance to go on a trip that will be etched into our memories for years to come. We got to go meet Thomas the Tank Engine in person! 🙂 The boys were thrilled to pieces when they realized where I was taking them and were definitely some of the most excited kids at the event. The professional photographer team that was there even went as far as to say that David and Joshua were the most excited kids they have encountered during the whole time the event had been going on (it is scheduled over the course of two 3-day weekends).

Joshua got to do a trick with the magician after the show. :) This is him standing tall and proud after making two balls out of one ;)

Joshua got to do a trick with the magician after the show. 🙂 This is him standing tall and proud after making two balls out of one 😉 Joshua was so excited about that one and the magician who did the trick with him played up the excitement for him by pretending Joshua was the one that pulled it off. : )

Among the things the boys got to do there, was watch live shows with a percussion team and a magician, watch videos and look at books (we missed the reading) about Thomas and his adventures, play in a tent full of all the tracks and trains a kid could dream of with several different play tables set up, bounce through an inflatable obstacle course, hang out with a couple of clowns, meet Sir Topham Hatt, and of course meet Thomas himself and even take a ride in one of his carriages!  The boys really loved that part. ^_^  When getting their picture taken in front of Thomas before hand though, we had to re-direct a couple of excited kids back onto the platform they were supposed to be standing on because they had run right past it with the intention of giving Thomas a hug and kiss. lol

David with his trains - cropped_blog readyThe boys and I had a lot of fun there and thankfully they allowed personal cameras too so I got a lot of pictures as well to capture all the excitement and joy. 🙂 What I found to be ironic though was that as much as he enjoyed everything, and was tickled pink to meet and ride with Thomas, David’s favorite part of the whole day? Getting to play in the tent with all the train tables, tracks, and trains. lol In fact, when it was time to leave so we could catch the bus back to our car, it was those very trains and tracks that made it difficult to do so. He didn’t want to let go and definitely didn’t want to leave them behind. He was in his own little version of Autism Heaven and he wasn’t about to leave quietly. ><  In the end though, we did get him to the bus and back to the car and he quickly turned his attention to the next stop in our adventure… dinner! lol

I hope you all enjoy the pictures. 🙂  Please tell us about some of your kids’ adventures and/or favorite things in the comments below.  I would love to hear about them. : )
